A dental filling is used to replace diseased tooth structure, decay (cavities). Silver amalgam is no longer used in this practice, as it can cause cracking of the teeth over time. We use composite resin, which looks like tooth structure.
Many people still have silver/mercury fillings in their mouths from years past. These fillings, because they are metal alloy, expand and contract with heat and cold. This often results in fracture of the teeth, requiring full coverage crowns. Replacing old, worn amalgam fillings before they break is advised. New bonding technology allows composite restorations to give more strength to the tooth, as well as beautiful esthetics!
