Periodontal disease is an infection of the supporting structures of the teeth, the gum tissue and bone, that if left untreated will result in tooth loss and loss of the underlying bone of the jaws.
Signs of periodontal disease include: bleeding gums when brushing the teeth, bad breath, or a persistent bad taste. It is not normal for gums to bleed when brushing. Periodontal disease is more prevalent in patients who smoke. The best way to avoid gum disease is to brush twice daily using an electric toothbrush with a two minute timer and follow with a once daily flossing routine. Your toothbrush cannot remove plaque from below the gumline or in between teeth, only dental floss can.
Your chances of gum disease do not increase as you get older. Lack of good home care (brushing and flossing) leads to periodontal disease.
