Proper home care, a stable bite, and regular dental exams are the key to keeping your natural teeth for the rest of your life. We strongly recommend the use of an electric toothbrush and daily flossing to keep the plaque and bacteria off of your teeth. Avoid soda, highly sugared drinks and excessive intake of candy. If you cannot brush after every meal, swish with water or chew sugarless gum to help keep the plaque to a minimum.
Why is oral hygiene so important? Adults over 35 lose more teeth to gum disease, (periodontal disease) than from dental decay. Three out of four adults are affected b periodontal disease at some time in their life. The best way to prevent cavities and periodontal disease is by proper tooth brushing and flossing techniques, performed at least twice daily.
Periodontal disease and decay are both caused by bacterial plaque. Plaque is a colorless film, which sticks to your teeth. Plaque constantly forms on your teeth. By thoroughly brushing and flossing you can remove this bacteria and help prevent periodontal disease and tooth decay. We will show you proper brushing and flossing techniques when you are in the office.
Daily brushing and flossing will keep dental calculus to a minimum, but a professional dental cleaning will remove calculus that you cannot remove with a toothbrush or floss. Your visit to our office is an important part of your program to prevent gum disease to and keep your teeth for your lifetime.
Good nutrition plays a large role in your dental health. Brushing and flossing help to keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong, and a nutritious diet will help to boost your body's immune system, leaving you less vulnerable to oral diseases.
How often you eat and what you eat have been found to affect your dental health. Soda, sugary drinks, (sweet tea), juices and candy stick to your teeth. Bacteria in your mouth feed on it, they then produce acids, which attack your teeth for up to 20 minutes or more, causing dental decay.
